Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
