Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
